How it works

FREE APP LOCK / 8.1.0

Set Expectations on a Shared PC

Access to one executable and privacy for a person are different tasks.

Begin with the Windows Session

If everyone shares the same signed-in account, they also share much of its desktop environment. Free App Lock can restrict selected executable files in that account, but it does not separate browser logins, cloud sessions or documents. Use individual Windows accounts for those boundaries.

Choose a Narrow, Understandable Goal

For example, you may want a local cataloguing utility left closed while someone borrows the desktop. Finish your work, exit that utility, confirm the executable path and apply the restriction. Keep the management password to yourself.

That is a restriction on the selected file. An alternate installation, a web app, a portable copy or another executable does not become covered because it has a similar name.

A Useful Conversation Before Sharing

  • Which app file is actually being restricted?
  • Is the app already running, and has its work been saved?
  • Does anyone need a separate Windows account instead?
  • Who knows the management password and holds the current recovery kit?
  • When will access be restored, and who will check the result?

For Games, Study and Family Routines

A chosen game EXE can be a suitable local target if it passes the checks, but this release is not a play-time scheduler, parental-control service or account-wide game policy. Launchers and additional game binaries can provide separate paths. Describe that limit clearly to everyone using the PC.
